QUICCHE blog: One week left and “there can be only one”…

Hi everyone, my name is Nothando Duma, a Masters student at the University of Cape Town. This is my first research cruise and I am here to collect nitrates(NO3-) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) isotope ratios and nutrient samples. I collect these from the water samples collected by the CTD Rosette. When I’m not collecting my own samples I assist in other areas such as  the data collection of the Vertical Microstructure Profiler (VMP), deployment of instruments like the wireflyer and moorings, which I did for the first time today (21/03/2023).

A fun game of assassin has started on the ship. We have been given a name, location and weapon. To eliminate someone you have get them alone at the assigned location with your weapon. Once eliminated you get their victim as your own and the game continues until only 2 are left. Everyone is currently scared of been alone with anyone, alliances are forming and trust has be broken. Our only safe haven is making sure you’re in a room with at least 3 people or our bunk beds. I’ll leave you with pictures of our two current victims.

One week left! Talk to you soon!

Nothando
