Cascades Expeditions

How does sea ice form, behaves and affects air-sea fluxes, biogeochemical tracer pathways and the fabric of sea ice as a living ecosystem during ocean freeze-up?

The Cascades campaign will take place from 29 October to 25 November 2026 in the Baffin Bay with the goal to qualitatively assess how sea ice forms, behaves and affects air-sea fluxes, biogeochemical tracer pathways, and the fabric of sea ice as a living ecosystem during ocean freeze-up.

The cruise will operate mostly in the dark and will use available sea ice data for navigation and planning. Many aspects of sea ice will be investigated thanks to a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary effort. During the campaign, observations will be carried from the ship [WAS IT THE NAME OF THE R/V?] both through en route recording (Scanning LiDAR, 360 and IR cameras, polarized camera, weather station and ADCP) as well as at stations (CTD-Rosette, SubOcean Profiling, Flowthrough in ice-free waters, water pumping, MVP), but also via zodiac, drones, wave buoys and an autonomous catamaran.
