BioSWOT2025 Program – How to get at MIO

The BioSWOT : Post-cruise and kick-off meeting will be held from Monday 5 to Wednesday 7 May, 2025 at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO), in Marseille.
Meeting description
Let’s share our thoughts, memories, and first results of the BioSWOT-Med cruise, and decide together the next steps of our journey into the finescale biophysical landscape.
The meeting will be organized around a series of thematic slots organized in terms of our work packages. Specific sessions will be dedicated to brainstorming on inter-work package questions, and in particular on the coupling mechanisms between the specific fine scale conditions we encountered (3D frontal dynamics, storm impact, internal wave dissipation, eddy lifecycle) and the biogeochemical and ecosystem response observed. Some key questions we will address are:
- How passive, active, and reactive finescale processes (Lévy et al. 2018) have interacted together?
- Which mechanisms we encountered are specific to the Mediterranean Sea and which ones may be typical of generically oligotrophic and moderately energetic conditions?
- How best we can use the incoming BioSWOT omics information (for which questions)?
- How did the sampling strategy we employed work?
- Which other collaborations or tools (e.g., modeling framework) we need to go further?
Priority will be given to presentations from students and postdocs. The presentation of preliminary results and of tentative ideas is strongly encouraged.
Scientific themes
SWOT CalVal, finescale physical landscapes, Eddy-wave interactions at SWOT scales, in situ estimations of vertical velocities, biogeochemistry, phytoplankton diversity, upper trophic levels and acoustics.

The meeting will be held over three days and there will be four sessions:
- I – Drawing landscapes
- II – Close encounters
- III – Plankton society
- IV – Zooday
