First “SWOT for India” Workshop

The first national “SWOT for India” workshop was held from September 7–9, 2026, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, bringing together 50 participants from IITs, ISRO, national laboratories, and other research institutions. The workshop fostered knowledge exchange and collaboration on applications of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission over India.

The new wave of oceanographers: Md Saiful Islam

PhD student at the crossroads of remote sensing, coastal hydrodynamics and numerical modelling.

Publication: Nonlinear responses from the interaction of internal solitary waves and eddies observed for the first time with SWOT satellite

Internal solitary waves impact physical and biological processes in the upper ocean, as well as human activities with potential impacts on navigation and coastal infrastructures. For the first time, thanks to the SWOT satellite, it was possible to observe their signature in sea surface height. This allowed researchers to study the interactions of internal solitary waves with eddies on the Amazon Shelf, leading to a better understanding of their complex interactions.

The new wave of oceanographers: Valentin Bellemin-Laponnaz

Physical oceanographer focusing on the development of reconstruction methods of sea surface height (SSH) from satellite altimetry measurements.

The new wave of oceanographers: Michael Hart-Davis

Post-doctoral researcher investigating tidal dynamics across the land-ocean zone.

The new wave of oceanographers: Anastasia Volorio-Galéa

PhD student working with a new Lagrangian methodology aimed at reconstructing high resolution SST (Sea Surface Temperature) submesoscale fronts with the ultimate goal of estimating the strain field at high resolution.
