INTERVIEW. Elvira Pulido is the leader of WP3 dedicated to nutrients in the ocean. She describes the importance of measuring nutrients concentration in the ocean - as they ultimately control biological activity and diversity - and how they are going to measure them in the BioSWOT-Med campaign.
INTERVIEW. Anthony Bosse is the leader of WP2 Physical Processes in the BioSWOT-Med campaign. He describes the different physical processes that will be studied during the campaign and the different sampling platforms used with the goal to understand how ocean dynamics from mesoscale (eddies and fronts of 10-50km) to dissipation scale (millimeter scale turbulence) impact the distribution of heat, its evolution with climate change, and how these processes influence the development of phytoplankton.
INTERVIEW. Gérald Gregori, BioSWOT-Med's Co-Chief Scientist, describes the sampling strategy of the campaign and how it will allow gathering data to investigate the drivers of plankton diversity and distribution in the Mediterranean Sea by studying finescale features such as filaments or small eddies. Even if these structures are weak and short-lived (fed days) they can indeed strongly influence the microbial community.
INTERVIEW. Andrea Doglioli, BioSWOT-Med's Chief Scientist, explains the objectives of the campaign and how he and his collaborators will try to disentangle the plankton paradox in the Mediterranean Sea by studying fine scales in the ocean. Results from the campaign will provide insights on the physical-biological coupling relevant for most of the global ocean.
Thanks to an exceptional work of the SWOT Project teams, some preliminary images of SWOT-derived sea surface height and sigma0 are being already produced. The images are generated with non-validated beta products from the SWOT KaRIn instrument in support to AdAC campaigns for their planning strategies.
INTERVIEW – Louise Rousselet, SWOT AdAC Science Officer, is in charge of producing the daily bulletin that informs BioSWOT-Med adaptive sampling strategy as well as the strategy of other SWOT AdAC campaigns. Here she describes what information is provided within the bulletin.
Zooglider is a specialized glider to study mesozooplankton. Thanks to a public website, everybody can follow it in real time while it samples waters around the Balearic Islands in the BioSWOT-Med campaign.
Thanks to an international collaboration with IMEDEA, SOCIB, SCRIPPS, LOCEAN and MIO, the zooglider was deployed and start to sample the water south of the Balearic Islands, waiting to be recovered during the BioSWOT-Med campaign.
The new ocean glider SEA090 was delivered today at MIO! It will be used for the first time in the BioSWOT-Med campaign.
The new Moving Vessel Profiler and its Multi-Sensor Free Fall Fish (MVP-MSFFF, so-called “big fish”), is now ready for the BIOSWOT-Med cruise.
